The boiler is an essential piece in the house. It not only helps keep the house warm during winter and chilly days but also provides you with a steady supply of hot water on demand. The boiler, like everything else, needs proper servicing and maintenance to ensure it is in tip-top condition for optimal performance. A properly serviced and maintained boiler can last for many years without any major incidents or breakdowns. The secret is regular maintenance and servicing. Here are a few tips to help you keep your boiler working optimally for longer.
1.Service The Boiler Every Year
Just like your car, regular servicing and maintenance is the key to your boiler running smoothly for longer. Manufacturers recommend having your boiler serviced at least once a year to ensure everything is in good condition and have anything broken fixed. Most issues including strange noises, leaks, and inefficacy are detected and fixed during the service call. Having these issues fixed on time helps prevent
2.Monitor Its Pressure Levels
This is especially important for boilers with a sealed system setup. Check with the owner’s manual to see what the recommended pressure is. Most boilers should run or read between 1-1.5 bar, anything lower than that means it needs a top-up. The manual should outline how this can be achieved at home.
3.The Heating System
Most of the boilers on the market today are designed to be installed in confined spaces. Although a space-saving measure, you still need to ensure there’s ample air flow around the unit for optimal performance. The vents need to remain unblocked to ensure it gets enough oxygen to function optimally. That said, it would be advisable to avoid keeping things inside the boiler closet.
4.Run The Heater Regularly
Most people only run their heaters during the winter and cold days. Leaving the heating system OFF for extended periods (in warmer months) isn’t however advisable. Experts recommend running the heating unit for at least 30 minutes per month to keep everything moving. You don’t want to come back to a seized boiler when you need it.
5.Inspect The Boiler Regularly
Annual servicing alone isn’t enough to keep the boiler system in top condition. You still need to actively monitor and inspect the system regularly. Look out for anything out of the ordinary, including strange noises, leaking fluid, cracks, rusts, or exposed wires. If possible, check the flame to see if it is blue in color. Any other color means the system isn’t getting enough oxygen, and should be inspected by a professional. Turn off the gas supply valve immediately if you notice a leak, and call a registered engineer immediately.
6.Inspect And Maintain The Radiators
The radiator system makes it possible for the boiler to distribute and dissipate heat to all parts of the house. A clogged or blocked radiator or vent could cause the boiler to work harder than it should to keep the house at the desired temperature. Inspect the radiators to see if they are getting warm or hot, and consider bleeding them if they remain cold despite the boiler running. Sludge buildup is one of the leading causes of radiator blockage in boilers, and could damage the entire system if not taken care of on time. Flushing regularly, or at least while the boiler is serviced, can help prevent this from happening.
7.Hire A Registered Gas Safe Engineer
Always hire a professional and certified gas-safe engineer to service your boiler. You also have their contacts close by in case of an emergency with the same. While it might be tempting to hire a cheap technician, this could come at a cost, hence not worth your time and money. Certified engineers are trained to handle the various types of boilers on the market, and have the required tools and expertise for the job. Consider installing carbon monoxide detectors in the house as well.
