Ways to Enable Microphone Access in Windows 11

While there are several benefits with the advent of technology in our lives, technology has also made it easy for hackers and cyber criminals to steal our personal information including name, address, card details, and other minute details by taking control of our microphones, and cameras. Privacy and security play a great role in keeping you safe and your device secure from hackers accessing your information. They could easily listen in on the microphone and gather information; hence, disabling your microphone is crucial if you wish to protect your data.

However, you cannot keep your microphone disabled at all times and would require it while on a conference call, an individual call, watching something, listening to audio, and others. While disabling and enabling the microphone on your Windows device is easy, some changes have been made by Windows in its latest version that might end up confusing you. If you are facing some issues with the microphone, read below to find some quick solutions. But first-

Why Has Your Microphone Been Turned Off?

While you would come across several reasons behind your microphone being turned off, the main reason and the most common one would be when one tinkers with the settings on their laptop. If someone changes the setting of the audio recording device by accident, then the microphone would get disabled too. Again, if you have been installing an external microphone, you might face trouble because it has not been set as the default option yet.

How To Configure Your Default Microphone?

  1. Open the Windows Setting. You could do so by either clicking on the option through your laptop’s Control Panel or clicking on Windows Key+I.
  2. Select the Sound/ Audio Option.
  3. In the input section, choose the microphone you wish to set as the default one. Once you have completed all the steps, your microphone would be set depending on which one you have chosen as default.

How Can You Enable Your Microphone?

1. Work On Your Privacy Setting

  • Select Settings from the Menu after opening your device.
  • Visit the left pane and from there, select Privacy & Security. Select the Microphone, which you would get to see on the right pane.
  • Check whether the Microphone access is turned on or not. If not, make sure you turn it on.

2. Modify Through Sound Settings

  • Press the Start button.
  • Choose Settings from the desktop.
  • Choose System, which you would see on the left pane, and then click on Sound on the right pane.
  • Pick the microphone that you wish to set default from the Input section.
  • Activate the Microphone you have selected by clicking on the Allow button, which you would see in the Audio section.

A crucial point to remember would be if you disable your microphone from this section, you would not be able to successfully enable it any other way.

3. Using Device Manager

Select Device Manager, after pressing the Windows Key+X.
Open the section on audio inputs and outputs where you could disable your microphone, perform a right-click and enable them again. This is one of the easiest ways by which a microphone could be enabled in Windows 11; however, it completely depends on your settings.

When on your Device Manager, update your drivers so that every function can be run successfully and efficiently.

How Can you Make Your Microphone Accessible To Only Certain Apps?

  1. Open Settings by clicking on Windows Key+ I.
  2. Select Microphone after opening Privacy and Security.
  3. Ensure that you have turned on the option where apps can access your microphone.
  4. Choose the apps where you wish to keep your microphone accessible.

Can Desktop Applications Be Prevented From Using Microphones?

There is no particular way by which you could prevent a particular program from using your device’s microphone but surely you can block microphone access to all desktop programs using special software. You could simply disable the Let Desktop apps have access to your microphone feature which would prevent all the regular applications from using your device’s microphone. When using a microphone, the best way to resolve any issue would be to check whether your microphone is suitable for the device by using microphone test tools.
