How to Turn on Dark Mode in Google Docs

April 15, 2022 by Tejas Maheta

The dark mode is one of the underrated features provided by Android, Windows, and iOS. Most of us use this feature to ensure better visibility in low-light conditions. In fact, many users have reported dark mode to cause less strain on the eyes when working for long hours. However, new users find it difficult to enable the dark mode because they do not understand the functioning of a different OS.

Also, the default working mode of Google Docs is the light mode to cater to a larger audience. But you can very easily enable the dark mode by following some simple steps. In this article, we will provide you with a comprehensive guide on how to turn on dark mode in Google Docs. Remember, you can use this guide to turn on dark mode in any Google workspace such as Google Slide, Google Sheets, etc.

Enabling dark mode on Google Chrome

The primary working platform for Google Docs and other such workspace features is the PC. This means that many users would be working on one of the popular three OS, i.e., Windows, Linux, and Mac.

Moreover, if your default browser is Google Chrome, enabling dark mode will be a piece of cake for you. This is because Google Chrome offers extended functionality to force dark mode in some of the applications. Here is how you can switch to dark mode on Google Chrome:

  1. At the top of your browser homepage, you will find an address bar. In this address bar, type the following link: chrome://flags.
  2. After pressing enter on the following link, you will be directed to a webpage.
  3. In the said webpage, locate the search bar in the top-right corner, type dark mode in it, and press enter.
  4. Now, you will see a list of functionalities. The topmost search result would be to “force dark mode for web contents.”
  5. On the right-hand side of the search result, you will find a dropdown box.
  6. Click on the drop-down box and change the setting from default to enabled mode.
  7. Once you click on the enabled button, chrome will send you a prompt asking you to relaunch Google Docs

Before clicking on the relaunch button, ensure that all your work is saved.

Enabling dark mode on Android and iOS

For those who use their phones to access Google Docs, switching between light and dark mode is easier than using a PC. Google has ensured seamless functionality of its applications so we could deliver our assignments within the stipulated time. In Android and iOS, there are two ways to enable the dark mode in Google Docs.

First, you can go into the device settings>theme>dark mode. This will enable a systemwide dark mode. Therefore, the Google Docs app will automatically switch itself into dark mode. However, if you just want the Google Docs in the dark mode, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Google Docs app on your phone.
  2. Click on the menu in the top-left corner that looks like three horizontal bars.
  3. Now, click on the themes option.

In the themes menu, click on “enable dark mode,” and you are good to go.
