How to Fix ‘Windows 11 Start Menu Not Working’ Issue?

December 31, 2021 by Tejas Maheta

Microsoft Windows is the highest used operating system on PCs worldwide. One of the primary reasons is the cross-platform compatibility features and professional utility that people get with this fine OS. Moreover, Windows has a simple interface, and people can learn all the ins and outs in no time. Additionally, Microsoft invests a lot of resources in making the experience as smooth as possible by regularly debugging the OS and adding relevant updates. However, despite all the success, Microsoft had faced its fair share of criticism when it tried to tweak its interface. Therefore, Microsoft stopped rolling new Windows since Windows 10 owing to its huge success.

People found numerous utilities for Windows 10, and huge corporations incorporated it effectively in their culture. So, for a long time, Microsoft has been updating and debugging Windows 10 only. However, with the changing digital space in this decade, Microsoft decided to level up their game by introducing Microsoft 11 in the market. The new Windows is loaded with a ton of modern technologies that makes it quite desirable.

However, it is still in the nascent phase at the user end, so there is a grave need for constant debugging to make it glitch-free and seamless. On the same lines, new Windows 10 users have been facing difficulties with the Windows 11 Start Menu.In this article, we will provide some temporary solutions to fix this issue until Microsoft comes up with a permanent fix.

Restart your PC

People who have been using technology for quite some time know that almost every issue can be fixed by reloading the software. This is especially true in cases where problems stem from memory leakage.

Memory leakage is a problem that we can troubleshoot in the Insider build mainly. So, the OS starts behaving abruptly in certain areas, especially where File Manager is involved. Hence, rebooting the OS fixes the problem temporarily.

Now, the question arises as to how we can restart your PC when the Start menu itself is non-functional. Here, you will have to navigate through the Win X menu. To access the Win X menu, press the Windows and X key together. In the menu that pops up, click on the Shutdown or Exit button. Next, click on the Restart button.

Uninstall and reinstall the update KB5004300

If rebooting the system doesn’t seem to work, we have got you covered. Some early Windows users diagnosed the issue with the update installation. In some cases, the update installation breaks due to several reasons, which causes the Start menu to malfunction.

If you are confirmed that this is the case, you will just have to reinstall the update driver KB5004300 that is responsible for the Windows installation. Now, just follow these simple steps to uninstall and reinstall KB5004300 to fix the start menu malfunction.

  • Press the windows and R key simultaneously to prompt the Run dialog box.
  • In the command box, type appwiz.cpl and press Enter. This will direct you to the Programs and Features page.
  • If the Programs and Features page asks for administrative permissions, click Yes.
  • Once you are on the Programs and Features page, click on the “View Installed Updates,” which is present in the menu bar on the left.
  • In the list of installed updates, look for the KB5004300. You may use the search box in the top-right corner of the screen to locate it.
  • Once you have successfully located the install that is concerned with KB5004300, right-click on that. In the prompt menu that opens up, click on the “Uninstall” button.
  • Now, you will see a Windows prompt on your screen asking for the final confirmation to uninstall KB5004300. In the prompt box, click on the “Yes” button.
  • Now, wait for the uninstallation to get complete.
  • Once you are through with the uninstallation, restart your PC.
  • When the system is rebooted, press the Windows and R key simultaneously to prompt the Run dialog box again.
  • In the Run command box, type “ms-settings:windows update.” This will direct you to the Windows Update menu, which is present in the Settings option of your OS.
  • In the Windows Update Tab, you will find the Check For Updates button on the right corner of the screen; click on it.
  • When checking for updates, Windows will find that KB54004300 is missing from the system. It will then reinstall the said update. Now, you have to ensure that the installation doesn’t break, or you will have to repeat the entire process.

Conclusion

Windows 11 is a new system update by Microsoft, so it will take some time for it to be completely user-ready. Tech companies wait for the users to report issues so they can effectively debug the software.

Over time, these software fix everything to ensure the best user experience. In this article, we have provided two ways to fix the start menu problem. From our experience, this should fix the issue, but if you are still facing glitches, you will have to wait for the next update. In the meanwhile, you can always report the problem to Microsoft directly so they can take cognizance.
